We are very concerned about the scandalous appointment of Dr Djurelova as the Director of the Home for Medico-social Care for Children “St Ivan Rilski” in Sofia. In this regard today the Coalition “Childhood 2025” in which Cedar Foundation is a member sent a letter to Dr Tanya Andreeva, Minister of Healthcare and Mr Hasan Ademov, Minister of Labour and Social Policy insisting that the appointment is withdrawn. Dr Djurelova was the Director of the Home until 2011 when there was a series of accidents with children. In one case one of the children’s hand was amputated (in 2003) because he was tied to the bed for a long time, and in another case a child with over 80% life-threatening burns did not receive medical care in the course of several days (in 2011). For the whole Coalition this appointment is in conflict with the government’s engagement to continue the process of de-institutionalization in Bulgaria.
