We are writing to you today on behalf of our organization, “Don’t Let Them Define You”, to bring awareness to the stigmas some schools place on students during their spirit weeks. “Don’t Let Them Define You” is an organization that is working to stop students from being labeled by their “status” on campus. Examples would be: drama freak, nerd, jock, stupid cheerleader, etc. We are working on ending the labeling of people as objects, instead of the people they are inside. During many school Spirit Weeks, there are days such as Nerd or Geek Day, Jock Day, and so forth. We propose that the schools in the Antelope Valley take a step towards stopping the labeling of kids, and hopefully stopping the bullying of these students as well, by revamping Spirit Week standards to include days like, Dress Like Your Favorite Book Character Day, Dress Like Your Role Model Day – positive, reinforcing education days. Nerd Day does nothing but promote bullying and harassment of kids who do well in school and like things that aren’t mainstream media favorites. We hope you take our suggestions under advisement. We feel that the Antelope Valley has so much to offer, and if we could be the first school district to take a stand on labeling, we would motivate other districts in the area to do the same. Our ultimate goal is to make every student feel safe at school. Zero Tolerance for bullying doesn’t always work, but knocking down the stereotypes might help.
