We began this parliament with 9 parties represented in the House - TopicsExpress

We began this parliament with 9 parties represented in the House of Commons. We now have 11. 1. Conservative 2. Labour 3. Liberal Democrat 4. Democratic Unionist 5. Scottish National 6. Plaid Cymru 7. Social Democratic & Labour Party 8. Alliance 9. Green 10. Respect 11. UK Independence Party If you exclude the NI and nationalist parties, we now have six UK wide parties in the house of commons. Before 2010 we only had three. Thats an incredible fracturing of the vote. In some constituencies it may be possible for a candidate to win on a vote share lower than 30% - I think Caroline Lucas won on the lowest share last time with 31.3%. We badly need proportional representation - an electoral system is no longer tenable when over 70% of the electorate has an MP they didnt vote for.
