We cant begin to explain how the Montesano City Attorney believes that he, the mayor, the administrator or anyone else has the authority to ask someone to bring in their personal computer or cell phone to be searched by the police department. City-related records on personal devices are subject to disclosure, the courts have ruled. But it is up to the individual official to provide those records from his/her devices(s). This is getting pretty personal and petty. The city failed to provide any interpreter for at least one council meeting; the city tried to keep the interpreter out of the executive session at another; when the meetings got longer, the city did not provide an interpreter team, as is the standard approach by the interpreters nationwide and in much of the world. The mayor apologized publicly, then agreed (as a settlement to a formal complaint) to provide the team interpreters. At the very next meeting, the agreement/settlement was violated. Now, leaders of the local Republican Party, who have been trying to defend the mayor and keep him from further self-inflicted harm, have blogger from Hoquiam (the former Republican Chair) on the attack. Marisa has dared to ask accountability questions to their past Republican of the Year who is our mayor. Unable to handle matters himself, the mayor has had her at past meetings to make parliamentary motions from the audience to shut down public comment. Now, the Hoquiam activist is scripting the mean-spirited attacks and use of the police department and city attorney to pseudo-seize Marisa Salzers personal phone and computer without cause. We have to ask how far this will go and how much this will cost the city? This team at the Montesano city administration (mayor/administrator/attorney/public work director) has already exposed the city and taxpayers to a wrongful termination lawsuit that could be larger than a million bucks. Looks like we might get exposed to an ADA lawsuit of potentially the same size.
