We funded a Food For Thought program this year, and one of the students in the Montezuma-Cortez school district had a transformative experience! She wrote this amazing letter to the White House. Think we can help her get invited to D.C.? Dear Mrs. Obama, My name is Tierney and I am from Pleasant View, Colorado. I am 17 years old and am a junior at Montezuma-Cortez High School. I am actively involved in many clubs and I try my hardest when it comes to school. I live on a family owned farm in southwest Colorado, and I love living on my farm, I learn patience, responsibility, love, and respect. This year I am currently enrolled in a nutrition class. Before I was in this class I kind of knew about food and nutrition since I live on a family farm, but now that I am in this class I TRULY understand food nutrition and how important it is to know about what we put in our body. I was completely for GMOs when I first entered this class, but after a while Ive decided that not all GMOs are good, especially for our bodies because most of them haven’t been tested. Since I live on a farm, I see the good and the bad of GMOs, and I have also learned about processed foods. Because I have learned so much about processed foods I now try to avoid them. I believe that more people need to learn about everything that I have learned. I have researched your “Let’s Move Campaign”, and I think what you did was amazing! I believe that if we combine our efforts, more people can become healthy. I want to go to college and become a Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher, so I would be involved in this endeavor with you. My grandma was a Family Consumer Sciences Teacher, so she knew how important it was that kids knew about what they were putting in their body. After teaching a couple of nutrition classes she decided that she was going to feed her kids healthier. She started to can everything and made everything from scratch. She hardly ever bought anything from the store. My dad was really appreciative of her doing this because it made him want to eat healthier too. When she taught Home Economics she had certain criterion that she had to follow, but it never was as specific as An Ounce of Nutrition’s “Food for Thought” curriculum, which gives Colorado teacher’s a lot of help about what to teach in their nutrition classes. I believe that if a nutrition class was required in every school like physical education is, then everyone would be aware of what they were putting in their body and how it might affect them later in life. I believe that if we informed everyone about nutrition then our obesity rate would go down. Many people don’t realize that certain foods are hurting their bodies. People know that fast food is bad for them, but they don’t understand why it’s bad. Is it fair that fast food restaurants can sell unhealthy foods and people not know about them? Is it fair that we get fat because of their food? If people realized how important healthy food is to their body, then people would want to start eating healthy. Because people would want to eat healthier, farmers would make a better living. Imagine the obesity rate coming down instead of going up; imagine healthy restaurants. Those images can only come true if we start requiring food nutrition classes for the next generations to come. We already have plenty of health classes, but what we need is food nutrition classes. I know that I have changed the way I eat due to my nutrition class. I thought I ate healthy before this class, but now I realize that I wasnt totally healthy. My parents grew up in two different worlds, my mom lived in the city, and my dad lived on a farm. There was a major difference to the way they ate. My mom didnt really eat healthy, and my dad never ate any chips, candy, and lots of vegetables. My mom didnt like to eat healthy, but my dad showed her how eating healthy can be good, and my mom showed my dad that everything was okay if it was in moderation. I truly believe that if we incorporate food nutrition classes as a graduation requirement then we would have a healthy nation. Very Sincerely, Tierney P.S. Feel free to invite me to the State Address, or the White House. (This letter shared with permission.)
