We had a fun week of it in the 2014 White Marlin Open, with our clients from the Maryland Live! Casino catching two white marlin and seeing several others. None made the length requirements to weigh or win the tournament, but we made new friends and enjoyed the three days offshore as well as the nights together. We will be posting pics and video asap, and in the meantime check out marylandlivecasino and all they have to offer 24 hours a day! For those interested in the details of our fishing week, we fished Day 1 on Monday down in the Norfolk Canyon where we caught our $574,000 winning fish last year. There was a lot of bait in the Norfolk - tinker mackerel on the inside and shallower water and squid on the outside and deeper water - but only a handful of tuna and marlin marks all day. We caught one of those marlin marks, a white one, and had several others up in the spread and seen tailing out to the side of the boat. Day 2 of the WMO - Thursday for us - we fished in the Washington Canyon and there was much less bait but some pilot whales working the usual small area of the canyon. As with Monday, we marked a few fish and caught one of them - a white marlin. We saw another one tailing late in the day but there was too much boat traffic to turn on him and that was our day... Day 3 of the WMO we went for it all and ran northeast to the 100 nautical mile tournament limit line - in our case in the Lindenkohl Canyon. The prior couple days had produced big yellowfin and bigeye tuna for some commercial and private friends, but when we got there it was apparent we werent the only ones who got the word as there were stick boats, trollers, and a bunch of chunkers who ruined the troll bite. We had one big bite on the shotgun 130 and I thought we might repeat our 2013 Friday miracle, but after about 15 seconds the hook pulled. With no more bites and all the private and stick boats switched over to chunking, we moved inside to 50 fathoms around 130 pm to look for a white marlin. We found one quickly as he appeared right behind our dredge, and we switched him off to the flat line bait but he dropped it and that was our day. We chunked briefly after the WMO time was over and caught our clients a yellowfin for sushi and sashimi dinner, then we ran back in 100 nautical miles at 33 knots to a 915 pm dock time. Long day but worth it to try to please our clients who had a long day of watching everyone else chunk yellowfins up there. Thanks again to the gang from Maryland Live! Casino and Executive Limo for the booking, the great anglers, and the great times during the days and nights. The Bahamas and Costa Rica are great options for this winters fishing! Charley
