We had a wonderful book club meeting today Al-Hedayah. We watched a video clip and then discussed the book, “Orientalism” by Edward Said. Our facilitator was Abdul Salih. Summation: The strength of Professor Edward Saids Orientalism is its highlighting of the underlying assumptions of dominance and subjection in Orientalist scholarship. Said correctly points out that the British, French and more lately the United States have relied on the reduction of the Orient to an academic study backed by a mythical image of its inhabitants and cultures as more primitive, passionate, mystical and illogical —thereby fabricating a view of Oriental culture that can be studied, depicted, and reproduced. Implicit in this fabrication, writes Said, is the idea that Western society is developed, rational, flexible, and superior. Book Club Meeting is open to everyone. To enrol, just send us an email to: hedayahvoice@aol and we will include you in our guest list. Next Book Club Meeting: Sunday, December 29, 2013 at 11:00 am Venue: Al-Hedayah Academy in the Admin Building Conference Room. Assigned Book: “History of God: The 4,000-Year Quest of Judaism, Christianity and Islam” by Karen Armstrong. Facilitator: Nizam Peerwani, MD
