We had a wonderful trip to California. The weather was cool, the scenery was gorgeous and most of the people, in my opinion though politically flawed, were friendly. If asked what was our favorite part of the trip was, I would have to say it was our visit to the Marine Wounded Warrior Battalion West at Camp Pendleton. We were escorted onto base by medically retired Marine Sgt. Stephen Lunt and his wife Ashley. Stephen has been on two PHO events and had a great time at each one. He was obviously held in high regard on base as we were cordially welcomed by everyone we met. Patti and I have dealt with hundreds of wounded Marines these last few years but never this many marines in one place. We saw them in a setting we had never seen before; Camp Pendleton. This place was unlike any of the other Wounded Warrior Transition Units we have visited in the past. Unlike other units we had visited, we were greeted with enthusiasm, not indifference. Appreciation for what PHO does was shown from the commanding officer to the lowest ranking Marine we met. Stephen and I spoke to a group of wounded warriors and then we met and visited with several officers. While there, we passed out PHO pamphlets, and business cards to many marines. We knew we had entered a new realm when we drove through the parking lot of the wounded warrior unit. A total lack of political correctness was exhibited for all to see. Names and slogans in old English/Gothic letters decorated the back windows of cars and pickups. Names like Death Dealer, I Got Your Jihad Right Here and Martyr Maker were seen in abundance. The Marines we met know what their mission is, they know who our enemy is and they deal with him with extreme prejudice. And, they don’t pussy foot around it. Patti and I have a new-found respect for them. We look forward to taking them deer hunting this fall. Semper Fi
