We had another of our wonderful pageants yesterday... it is always - TopicsExpress

We had another of our wonderful pageants yesterday... it is always such a fun time, and so good to connect with our wonderful pageant families, who become like part of our family. That said, we had a totally unexpected event... Stephanie, one of the moms, slipped into a diabetic comma toward the very end of the pageant. Fortunately, Sophia, her little girl (shes only 9), recognized what was happening while onstage for her last time. She went to her mom, and when she realized how bad it was, she got her friends, AMarie and Rachel, to help her... she didnt think it would be right to disrupt Manda during the pageant, but Rachel made a judgement call and went to her, anyway. Then she led the girls over to where the candy is kept, and got the pixie sticks that Manda keeps around for her hypoglycemia. In the meantime, Jeannie, a woman who wed met 2 years ago at a craft fair & never saw or talked to again, had just contacted us for the first time last week, and Manda invited her to stop in & watch the pageant. She had just come from church and took a chair behind Stephanie. When she realized what was happening, she dug into her purse & got out her sugar pills, because she just happens to also be diabetic... how is that for an angel in the right place?!! She directed Sophia to break them up & put them into her mouth. AMarie got her mom, Amy Jo, who by great fortune is an amazing nurse & knew just what to do. Lisa, one of our judges, saw what was taking place & came over to offer assistance & advice, too, since her dad suffered diabetes. Manda & I are both good in emergency situations, but I must admit that it felt great to know we werent alone in handling what was happening. I NEVER want to go to the hospital, and hesitate to drag someone else there who is saying no she didnt want to go, and yet there were a few times I was very close to calling 911. After 3 or 4 sugar pills, some pixie stick sugar, and 1/2 glass of orange juice... her blood sugar had come up to 33. Thats bad. Some more juice & food, and it hit 46, and she started coming back around. Throughout it all, Sophia was absolutely amazing... she kept her cool and kept forcing her mom back to conciousness. She found her moms lost keys, and went out & got her blood sugar tester, and she literally made her eat, helping me pull her mouth open, then closing it and forcing her to chew after I stuck the food in. She as an absolute hero that day. Throughout the chaos, the families of the other contestants were great... understanding & supportive. We had one young lady who had yet to do her talent, and it must have been so nerve-wracking for her to be put on hold, and yet she remained poised, and ended up winning the Overall Talent award. My mom, Sue, and our judges, Lisa, Rhianna, & Melissa were so wonderful! They took over as hosts when we got behind, and mingled with everyone, so we could tabulate & double check all the scores before the crowning. When all was said and done, scores tabulated, it turned out that Sophia had won the biggest prize of Grand Supreme Queen... and she was also awarded the Judges Choice award for her calm, mature, and fast thinking actions of the day. But I also have to say, ALL of our contestants are true winners... the friendship & caring I saw this day (and always) is truly heartwarming! At the end of the day, Stephanie was just fine, and Im sure she is even prouder of Sophia than any of us... and that is a lot. Im so glad everything worked out so well!!! Congratulations to Sophia and to all of our young ladies... I am so proud of you!!!
