We have all read the sad news this morning - that Robin Williams sadly found himself with no other option other than to end his life. It would seem that Robin had the black dog of depression by his side and the dog would not leave. I hope most of you never suffer with this dreadful debilitating mental condition. Today for the first time I would like to stand up and be counted publicly. For most of my life I have suffered with depression and at times it has been tough, when I am not depressed I am manically over compensating. Medication helps, understanding friends and family helps, a great employer helps and someone watching over me helps... But I am a high functioning Manic Depressive. I have friends who know, I have friends that dont know. I have friends who like me have had or still have mental issues and I have friends that dont. It does not define me, alas it is a part of me and I am not going to hide it so that the nay sayers can have a mental image of what they think mental people are - well here I am! What I want to tell everyone is, that I try and lead a normal life as best I can - being mentally unwell is not a weakness, it is not anything to be ashamed of and it is not contagious. You have all known me some length of time, you all know if you think about it that I have issues and if by reading this you wish not to be in contact with me, then it is your loss - good bye. However, there is a statistic that mental illness affects one in three of us at sometime in our lives. At some time or other you could be the one who is suffering and you need a friend to stop you making the ultimate choice. Ours is not to reason why, it is not to blame - it is to cope, to grow and to be the best person that we can. be happy my friends - Today a whole family lost a father, husband brother friend and the world mourns.
