We have got back most of Melissas pathology results, unfortunately it is not good news. The type of tumour she has is called an astrocytoma. This type of tumour occurs only in the brain, they are graded from 1-4 based on their severity. Grade 1 tumours are the lowest grade, generally benign and slow growing. Melissas tumour is grade 4. This means it is malignant, highly aggressive and fast growing. She will be starting radiotherapy and chemotherapy soon. Radiotherapy will be daily for 6 weeks, chemotherapy will be in pill form and will be for at least 6 months. The good news is that the tumour has been removed and that as she is young, the doctors can be aggressive in treatment. We wont know how she will react to the treatment until it is started, or to what extent her personality, memory or brain function may be affected. For the time being, please refrain from contacting her directly. She is still recovering from surgery and will need some time to adjust.
