We have learned a few things while fostering and having our own dogs... Potty breaks often and not just at your convenience, doggie doors/open doors only work once a puppy or dog is trained where to go, rubbing a nose in old pee means nothing but that you are kinda rude and like putting noses in gross stuff. Remove temptation!! Pick up anything you dont want in your dogs mouth, toys shoes etc put away in rooms not accessible, a perk is that this is one of the best ways to get your kids to pick up their toys :) Buy a solid garbage can with a lid or keep it under a sink or in a pantry/closet, that stuff smells like food so of course they are gonna dump it. When you find the inevitable woopsie, take a step back, take a deep breath, think of how to prevent it from happening again and then look at the dog/puppy and remind yourself that they are still learning and it really isnt the end of the world. Pick up the mess and have your dog do their favorite trick for you, whether a paw shake or just a tail wag, it will remind you why you pick up poo, soak up pee, add ten minutes to your morning routine to move the garbage can pick up toys and shoes, why you bought the extra tall clothes hamper, and why you couldnt imagine a day without them.
