We just received a call from the OR and Garrett is doing great. To this point, there have been no complications or surprises. It may still be another hour or so of surgery, but at this point, we are looking good! In pre-op, we found out that the surgery could take up to 4-6 hours. Heres what I found out: While the neurosurgeon is doing the procedure, a neurologist is also in the OR testing each nerve fiber. Each nerve fiber is tested using a very sensitive EMG (webmd/brain/electromyogram-emg-and-nerve-conduction-studies). This test measures the time it takes for a signal to be transmitted down the nerve path and back.... Kinda like a Ping. If, youve had carpal tunnel syndrome, then youve had this type of test. So, basically, they are measuring the response time or, in Garretts case, response at all. With Cerebral Palsy, this signal doesnt return to the spine. It only makes it to the door outside the spine which then creates the reflex/tone. So, now we understand why the surgery takes so long. They evaluate and test 300 nerve fibers using the EMG. We will update in a few hours to let you all know how hes doing... How were doing. While waiting, we were able to tour the Rehab Unit here at Frazier Hospital in Louisville. Its amazing and full of color! You all will have an opportunity to experience a virtual tour once we get on the floor. I will create an album to show different areas of the hospital so you can use as reference. Thank you all! -Dustin
