We know certain chemicals are toxic to our bodies and the environment and pose a serious public health threat. We also know that the process called “hydraulic fracturing,†used to harness natural gas and oil, involves pushing water, sand, and over ten thousand gallons of potentially toxic chemicals underground. These chemicals may contaminate the water or air at various stages of the fracking process. The health and environmental impacts of many of these chemicals are unknown, and what we do know is disturbing. People like you are telling the EPA that they want full transparency around fracking chemicals, and you should too! The EPA is taking comments from the public until this Thursday, September 18, about how much transparency should be required for fracking chemicals. Lets make sure that they’re not solely hearing from the natural gas and chemical companies. Tell EPA to lift the veil of secrecy and publicly disclose health and safety information on fracking chemicals. All you need to do is simply go to the EPA’s website and write your public comment. Below is a sample message for you to tweak as you see fit. Sample message to the EPA: I am deeply concerned about the lack of transparency around the health and environmental impacts of chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing. The public has the right to know about the chemicals that are ending up in wildlife, our drinking water, lakes and rivers. Existing disclosure practices are not enough. Please use the full extent of your authority to require companies, especially manufacturers and processors, to report at least the identities and health effects of hydraulic fracturing chemicals and mixtures. Please then see that all relevant health and safety information is publicly disclosed so we know the risks were facing. Help us ensure that the natural gas and chemical industries don’t dominate this public process; the EPA needs to hear from you today. Let the EPA use TSCA in one of the few ways it can! Take action now; just a minute of your time will make all the difference.
