We live at a time when the average working man and woman are under attack, and this includes an attack on labor unions. The union movement built the Middle Class and fought for the child labor laws, the creation of O.S.H.A., overtime laws, and the weekend. When people attack unions (and they are not management), it is generally an attack motivated by jealousy. Instead of asking why are union employees making so much, you should be asking yourself why are you making so little. The so-called “Right to Work” laws are a most egregious attack on the working man and woman; and the name is a horrible misnomer. Right-to-Work laws began in the South and they were aimed at white workers who did not want to work side-by-side with black men. Today, in so-called Right-to-Work states, employees make less money and have worse health care that in closed-shop states. Today, as I type this, there have been strikes by fast-food workers in the east; and a major retailer is in the spotlight for paying its employees so little they qualify for welfare. There should be no full-time worker in America that is paid so little that he qualifies for government assistance. Attacks on the unions by Corporate America and their elected shills are attacks on the Middle Class. The Middle Class built America, and to attack them is to indulge in the most despicable evil. An organization that specializes in union-busting should be declared a Terrorist Organization, its funds should be impounded, and its officers should be imprisoned forever. I personally have worked in both union shops and non-union shops and I have to tell you there is no comparison. When I worked in a union shop I made a far better wage and had better health care. It wasn’t ideal, but I was treated with some respect. Without a union to protect our rights against the evils of Corporate America, we will all be stuck in the underbelly of society forever! If you think I unnecessarily malign the forces of Corporate America, bear this is mind. When the Great Recession started, Corporate America laid off each others’ customers. Think about this for a moment: They Laid Off Each Others’ Customers! How can a business survive when the people who buy its products are suddenly without a job? This is what laissez-faire capitalism does. It indulges in the most stupid and heartless behavior, all for the sake of the quarterly dividend! If you want your country to prosper, if you want yourself to prosper, if you want the freedom and security to pursue your True Will, than you had best be on the side of the Middle Class worker who is working for a better life and country.
