We never say we take; We say they give instead. The idea that animals sacrifice themselves for us is one of the most pervasive myths in human civilization, spanning every culture on the planet and every age, from the earliest storytelling traditions to current times. Yet the intention and the act of making a sacrifice requires freedom to act and freedom to choose, at the very minimum, and domesticated animals have neither. Claiming that animals make sacrifices for us is our way of absolving ourselves of the guilt for causing them intentional harm by assigning them false attributes which contradict their basic interests in staying alive and avoiding pain, suffering and death.
