We now turn to each word in Philippians 4 we need to “fix our thoughts” on and today we begin with “true.” Ellicotts Commentary defines it in this manner – “Truth is the inherent likeness to God, who is Truth.” It also speaks of a total honesty which deals with a pandemic condition among mankind we all suffer with called living out the big lie. Frankly, I want to be fixated on truth and I know that the essence of my salvation from darkness into light came about when I faced up to the truth of God’s claim over my life through Jesus’ sacrifice, resulting in the recognition of my utter sinfulness and crying out to God to have mercy upon this poor pathetic person called Philip DeVries. Let us also face up to reality and recognize that our potential for lying to ourselves, about ourselves and about others does not stop when we become Christians, but must be worked out day by day, thereby the necessity for “fix your thoughts.” Going back to Ellicotts definition – I want to be more like God who is Truth and this of necessity should be bedrock of our life on earth without which we are going to be flagrantly and poignantly deceived and decimated by life. Give me an “honest Joe” to be around any time rather than people who are consistently fooling themselves about what they are and their ambitions. If you can take this, you will be a changed person.
