We only have until this Friday to send in objections to Fostons Pig Factory in Derby, which would be one of the largest factory farms in the UK, containing 2,500 sows (mother pigs) and over 22,000 weaners (a pig to be reared for pork), with 1,000 going for slaughter each week. The indoor pig factory will be built on a green-field site, just 100m from local residents and 150m from a women’s prison. If allowed, local residents’ and prisoners’ health will be jeopardised, local independent farmers will be undermined, antibiotic resistance will be accelerated, animals will be exploited and a green-field site will be concreted over irreversibly. This could be the first of many more industrial sized indoor pig rearing units in the UK. We need to show council planners that we do not want these US styled factory farms in the UK.
