We should pray for orissa and other state where the Cyclone Hudhud claims 8 lives in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, Visakhapatnam worst hit IndiaToday.in New Delhi, Monday, October 13, 2014 Cyclone Hudhud pounded the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha with heavy rain and winds of almost 200 kmph on Sunday leaving eight people dead and a trail of devastation with Visakhapatnam where the very severe storm made landfall bearing the brunt. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has asked the Centre to declare cyclone Hudhud as a national calamity and also sought an ad hoc relief package of Rs 2,000 crore. The cyclone is similar to last years Phailin that crossed the Odisha coast leaving behind a trail of destruction. Watch video: Impact of cyclone Hudhud Here are the latest updates on the developing story: 10.15 am: National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams with personnel from various government departments have started clearing felled trees, electricity and communication poles and hoardings from roads in the affected areas. 10.00 am: The cyclone has lost speed and weakened since Sunday night and now turned into a deep depression: weather reports. 9.45 am: Both runways at naval air station INS Dega will be fit for flying by 2.30pm : Navy statement 9.27 am: P-8I long range maritime reconnaissance being prepared to carry out damage assessment of coastal areas hit by Cyclone Hudhud. The aircraft is based at INS Rajali in Arakkonam. 9.10 am: Death toll 8, 4 lakh evacuated According to preliminary assessment, the death toll is eight, five in AP (three in Visakhapatnam and one each in Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts) and three in Odisha. A little over four lakh people, about 250,000 in four districts of AP and 156,000 in nine districts of Odisha, were evacuated to relief camps. 8.58 am: Hudhud to weaken gradually Latest weather bulletin said Hudhud lay centred very close to south Chhattisgarh and adjoining southwest Odisha. It would move north-northwestwards and weaken gradually. Under the influence of the system, heavy rainfall would occur over Visakhapatnam, Vijayanagaram and Srikakulam districts of north Andhra Pradesh besides some districts of south Odisha during the next 24 hours. 8.40 am: Extensive damage at Vizag Airport. Runway clearance is under process at Dega to resume aircraft operations. 8.30 am: Heavy rain and gusting winds continue Extremely turbulent weather conditions prevailing in area with gusting winds and heavy to very heavy rainfall. Dense cloud cover over area. Large number of trees uprooted and fallen on roads and power supply cables snapped. No power supply and risk of operating generators view power supply cables may cause electrocution. 8.20 am: Around 70 per cent power lines snapped in Visakhapatnam. Andhra Pradesh govt to buy 40,000 electric poles in the three north coastal districts. 8.10 am: Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu to operate out of Vizag this week. 8.00 am: Over 207286 people evacuated from ten districts of Odisha. 11:30 pm: Modi briefed about situation in wake of Hudhud Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth on Sunday briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the situation in the districts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha affected by cyclonic storm Hudhud that hit the countrys east coast earlier on Sunday and left six people dead, sources said. 10:39 pm: Navy to lead Op Lehar to rescue people Responding to cyclone Hudhud, the armed forces repositioned their resources to assist the civil administration to launch rescue and relief operations in the affected regions of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The Navy has been appointed as the lead agency among the armed force to carry out relief and rescue operations which have been code-named Op Lehar. 10:00 pm: Telangana offers help to cyclone-hit Andhra Telangana Chief Minister K.
