We spend so much time trying to fill kids’ heads with politically-correct messages, we don’t consider the messages they get when they read between the lines. For instance, the latest classroom crusade is the anti-bullying movement. Of course, everyone agrees bullying is bad, so the programs must be good, right? Well, a University of Texas at Arlington criminologist studied dates from 7,000 students in all 50 states and found that the programs are actually having the opposite effect. Not only are they having no positive impact on reducing bullying, but bullies are watching the bullies in the anti-bullying videos and picking up new bullying techniques from them. It’s a teachable moment, all right, but not the kind intended. It’s like our grandparents used to say about kids: Little pitchers have big ears. And there’s always some other kid who’ll make fun of them for having big ears.
