We still need volunteers to help with the 2015 Southern Nevada - TopicsExpress

We still need volunteers to help with the 2015 Southern Nevada Homeless Census! Volunteers will begin their night counting the homeless at 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, and finish by 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 28. We are especially in need of volunteers with cars who are able to drive their team around one of the areas being counted. Any individual or community group interested in volunteering may register online at helphopehome.org (look under “Save the Date” on the left), email [email protected] or call (702) 455-5832 as soon as possible. Prospective volunteers are asked to attend one of the training sessions being held Today in Commission Chambers at the Clark County Government Center at 500 S. Grand Central Parkway in downtown Las Vegas. There is one training left this evening from 5:45 until 6:45. The annual homeless census shows us where we stand in our efforts to eliminate homelessness and makes us eligible for grants that support a variety of assistance and training programs. But we need volunteers to help us conduct this count, and so we are calling on local residents to once again step up and help us count those most in need. Volunteers will be assigned to teams and deployment centers to count the homeless population in designated areas without interacting with or disturbing the homeless at that early hour. A count of the homeless in Clark County is a prerequisite to qualifying for federal grants for homeless programs. Southern Nevada received more than $10 million last year from these grants. The homeless census also provides key data indicating the need for such programs and provides a benchmark to measure regional efforts. This is the eighth countywide effort to conduct a person-by-person count of the homeless in Clark County. The 2014 homeless census found more than 9.400 homeless people staying in shelters or on the streets. For more information, go to helphopehome.org, or call (702) 455-5832.
