We take a closer look at our newest recruit … KARL Henry began his career at Stoke City, coming through the youth system before making his first-team debut as a substitute in the Potters’ Football League Trophy fixture against Walsall in February 2001, which they won 4-0. Henry successfully broke into the side on a regular basis the following season, while still only 18. He made 28 appearances in all competitions as Stoke won promotion via the play-offs to what is now known as the Championship. Over the course of the next four years, Henry became an integral part of Tony Pulis’s side and featured regularly as they cemented themselves in the Championship. In the summer of 2006, with his Stoke contract coming to an end, Henry joined his boyhood club Wolves and was initially used as a right-back during the 2006/07 season, a position he is more than adept in. In December that year, having only been with the club four months, Henry, then 24, was given the captain’s armband by manager Mick McCarthy in the absence of the injured Jody Craddock. Owing to his natural leadership qualities, Henry regularly skippered the side in Craddock’s absence as Wolves fought their way to promotion glory. Having narrowly missed out in 2007 and 2008, a return to the top-flight was achieved in 2009 as the Molineux outfit won the division. Operating in central midfield, Henry played 47 games in all competitions that season and skippered the side for the vast majority of the campaign. When Wolves were presented with the Championship trophy on the final day, Henry and Craddock lifted it together. Henry comfortably handled the step-up to the Premier League, retaining his place in the heart of the Wolves midfield and also keeping the captain’s armband. After two successful seasons fighting against relegation, Wolves dropped out of the top flight in 2012. Henry remained with the club but could do nothing to prevent the Midlanders slipping into League One last term. Internationally, Henry has been selected for England at U18, U20 and U21 level. He was also named in the senior team’s provisional squad for their fixture against Denmark in February 2011, under Fabio Capello.
