We wanted to take a moment and express an incredibly sincere THANK YOU to everyone who has reached out, commented or otherwise expressed compassion and sympathy at the passing of Gracie. Everyone is moved by how much she touched so many people’s hearts. We’ve posted several additional pictures of Gracie through the years at events or just hanging out at home. While Gracie came from a high profile case, to those that knew her, she was just a little, black dog, hanging out at the house and on the sofa with her other rescued buddies or lounging around a dog bed at events letting people pet and kiss her. But despite the years of suffering and neglect and the toll it must have taken on her physically and emotionally, at heart, she was a really “just a dog”, like any other dog, limitless in the love she had to offer and indomitable in her spirit. And therein lies the beauty of these creatures - no matter where they came from, whether they’re brindle, blue or just a plain black dog, whether from a well-publicized abuse case or anonymous and forgotten in an unknown backyard, they want love and companionship and they will offer so much more in return. The fact that a little, black pit bull from a backyard chain could touch so many is a testament to the potential of every dog suffering in similar circumstances and weve had a number of people ask how they can help in Gracies memory. If you know someone thinking about adoption, encourage them to consider adopting a pit bull – our shelters are full of them. Encourage them to adopt a black dog – they’re too often passed over. And while Gracie’s time here has passed and her work on this planet is done, there is no shortage of other dogs in our area, on chains, in shelters, in small backyard pens, being neglected or otherwise in need of help and our work to help them will continue as her legacy. Any funds donated in Gracie’s name will be put towards our Community Outreach program which actively visits low income neighborhoods in the Richmond, Virginia area to provide help and support for outdoor dogs and their owners in the form of free spay/neuter services, vaccines, food, collars/leashes, toys, and most importantly, help and information to improve the long term care of these animals. Donations can be made through the following link and feel free to leave a note or thoughts in the “Additional Comments” field that we will share with Gracie’s mom: https://app.etapestry/onlineforms/RichmondAnimalLeague/GG.html Thanks again for everyone’s sympathy for Gracie and her beloved mother, Sharon.
