We were advised that Douglas County Animal Shelter has been closed - TopicsExpress

We were advised that Douglas County Animal Shelter has been closed for the past two days in order to do a detailed cleaning. It is our understanding that there was an issue with the cats getting sick and dying. Per confirmation from the shelter, it was determined that one of the cats tested positive for Feline Panleukopenia. Therefore the population of the remaining cats at the shelter were euthanized and a very detailed cleaning took place in the affected areas As volunteers, we are beyond heartbroken to know that so many lost their lives. We mourn and grieve for all that crossed the bridge due to this crisis. We hope that going forward that attention to issues regarding sick animals will be a priority. In addition, we hope that steps are taken to make sure that the proper cleaning procedures and intake inoculations are in place to protect any and all animals that come into the shelter. We also hope that the leash law for cats will be done away with and a TNR program will be implemented in Douglas County. This would significantly reduce the number of cats being brought into the shelter. We will continue to network and try to do what we can to help find homes and rescues to help the animals in need. We ask that you join us in continuing to be their voice. They need our help and deserve a chance to find a loving forever home.
