Wed like to take a moment and thank Paul Gani. He posted a great comment about his experience during a bug-out of Hurricane Rita, with his chance encounter of a Lodge Cast Iron Sportsman Grill: ...We bugged out from Galveston for Hurricane Rita, the hurricane that never was. We got to a hotel on the “Dry side” of Houston and the storm hit in the wee hours of Saturday morning. As expected, the power went out and everyone was milling about in the breezeway near the entrance and some one “Good ol boy” from Ga. pulled out a Lodge Cast Iron Sportsman Grill, (I called it a hibachi.) He only had enough charcoal leftover from a previous outing to do what I thought would be a few hot dogs. The hotel kitchen brought out a walk in cooler full of steaks, chops, chicken and burgers. They also brought out a case of paper plates and plasticware. We laughed and told them that was great but we will never have enough coal to do all of this. they said to do what we could because it would go to waste anyway with the power out. People brought out meats and fish from their rooms. A church group that had gotten held up in Houston returning from NOLA to Cali found themselves in the charity business again. Little did they know when they left home that they were going to get a twofer. Back to the grill. This thing with, literally a handful of coal, in a harsh post hurricane wind, fed 500 people. Folks coming in from I-10 looking for refuge couldn’t get a room but we fed them and and sent them on their way. The food never ran out and the fire never quit. I’m not sure if it can all be credited to the tough little grill on a piece of plywood on a tailgate or something more divine but it sure felt like a loaves and fishes moment...
