Wednesday, October 15 – Phil Taggart UC Santa Barbara, College of Creative Studies Literature Symposium at the Old Little Theater at 4 pm Phil Taggart’s new book of poems is Rick Sings (Brandenburg Press) Rick Sings’ main muse is a 57 year-old schizophrenic and sometimes homeless man; my brother Rick. He has lived in various places within a few miles of me since he arrived on my doorstep over 30 years ago. This book of poems is about him, our family and many people like him living on the streets. from Rick Sings Polaroid the guy in the polaroid sitting next to Rick thumbs-up over a paper plate of last year’s Thanksgiving chicken is dead Tom and Rick were friends for years went to the fair together free lunch injection day many of Rick’s friends have died his childhood friends long gone his condition a barrier I’m thankful for this picture is scrawled across the bottom of the photograph they’re both smiling Phil Taggart has published two previous collections of poetry, Opium Wars (Mille Grazie Press) and an art book in collaboration with Texas artist Ann Harithas, Cowboy Collages. He served for nine years as the Poetry Editor of Art Life, and is currently editor and publisher of Askew with Marsha de la O and Friday Lubina. He received a Champion of Mental Health Award from the Turning Point Foundation for his work promoting the understanding of mental disorders, an Art Stars Award from the Ventura County Arts Council, and the Mayor’s Art Award.
