Wednesday “Only the unknown frightens men. But once a man has faced the unknown that terror becomes the known.”- Antoine de Saint-Exupery Some may say the future is hard to face because there are too many unknowns that can happen. I believe many people are afraid of what they don’t know, and we really don’t know what the future holds. John Lennon once said,” The unknown is what it is. And to be frightened of it is what sends everybody scurrying around chasing dreams, illusions, wars, peace, love, hate, all that. Unknown is what it is. Accept that its unknown, and its plain sailing.” He has a good point. That is really good advice. The unknown has been blamed for people staying in certain unfavorable situations and for these lives of quiet desperation. However, if we took John Lennon’s advice, it doesn’t seem nearly as scary, does it? I know, from stepping into the unknown a few times, that there is much good to be derived from it. It seems like you are taking a leap of faith…and maybe you are, but once you are out there, you are simply making new choices and then new events and situations await you. Theres no way to completely eliminate the fear of unknown from your life. Its as valid an emotion as joy or sadness. Fear of the unknown is a commonly used phrase to describe the automatic aversion people feel to something thats different. If youre afraid of something because its a mystery, try exposing yourself to it in small doses until you gain a better understanding and your fear begins to dissipate. Fear builds character and teaches us how to act with courage. Even the most courageous people have fears to overcome. No matter what it is that scares you, learn how to acknowledge, confront and take ownership of your fear to keep it from holding you back in life. What I realize is that everyone gets scared. Sometimes just acknowledging our fears is enough to make us feel better. And while it sometimes takes a lot more to ease our mind, we can console ourselves with the knowledge that life can be scary at times. However, what Ive learned is that sharing our unknown thoughts with other people can make fear less overwhelming, because we are not letting them grow inside ourselves as pent up emotions. H.P. Lovecraft once said, “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is the fear of the unknown.” Fear of the unknown comes before understanding but wanting to know is followed by wisdom. Most often, confronting fears head-on is the best way to overcome them but sometimes to withstand fear can get tough and it doesnt always lead to a triumphant conclusion or immediate dissipation of the fear. Do you fear failure? Fear not. In reality, failure only makes you stronger. Every person (especially the successful ones) that ever walked the planet has failed, and countless times too. Nobody wakes up successful and wise; it comes only from experience, by making mistakes. Be prepared to deal with failure. Youll probably have to confront your fear many times before you can declare it conquered. It takes a certain amount of momentum to deal with fear. When youre faced with setbacks it can be tempting to decide to give up. Stay determined to persevere even when it seems impossible to get past your fear. Never let anyone hold you back. Recognize when someone is feeding your fears by telling you youre inadequate or incapable of changing. Surround yourself with people who want you to overcome your fears and reach your potential. Relinquish the cynical side and let it go. The time is now to live a life of love, peace and happiness. The unknown isn’t so bad at all. Some love the unknown. It’s the discovery of what will be happening and just kind of sitting back and not knowing. Therefore, it is good to love the unknown. Be strong enough to stand alone, smart enough to know when you need help, and brave enough to ask for it. Not in any way let the failure of your past and your fear of the future ruin your confidence today. Always stay focus and positive because today could be the best day of your life. Never fear the unknown because it will surely fear you. Face it!
