Weekend Sports Review Welcome the Weekend Sports Review: Cream rises to the top and sometimes flops like a one hit wonder, can you say “Marques Houston”. To put this into context, teams with extensive pedigree are expected to hit the ball running. This past weekend is a clear example of how teams, with small stature should not be underestimated. Soccer: PSL (South Africa) – Mpumalanga Black Aces 1-1 Platinum Stars Themba Zwane had the home side ahead on the half-hour mark, but Stars hit back before halftime when Ofentse Nato scored into his own net. Tuks 1-0 Orlando Pirates Gone are the glory days when Pirates won the treble under the leadership of coach Ruud Krol. This is more than evident in a game which Ama Tuks, once again show that they can be giant killers. Polokwane 1-3 Bidwest Wits Wits eased to a win with gaols from Jabulani Shongwe, Papy Faty and Sthembiso Ngcobo while the consolation goal came from defender Vukile Mngqibisa. Amazulu 0-2 Mamelodi Sundowns Surprise Moriri opened the scoring for the Brazilians early in the 1st half before Teko Modise doubled the lead, late in the 2nd half. EPL (England) – Chelsea 4-0 Tottenham Hotspur Tim Sherwood vs. Jose Mourinho, that’s not a fair fight no matter what the situation you can put the Special One in, he’ll come out tops. The Clash between Chelsea and Tottenham at the Bridge was a clear indication of how Chelsea, are able to allow teams to attack them vigorously without conceding a goal. The 1st goal was scored after Vertonghen slipped up, tripping over himself allowing the alert Samuel Eto’o to score. Minutes later Kaboul received a red card and Hazard did the honours at the spot kick, Demba Ba ended the game off with a 2 goals in two minutes to end the routing. Manchester United 3-0 West Bromwich Albion If there is any top 6 team in the Premier league who cannot afford to drop points, its Manchester United. United did not let their guard down as in the 1st round of league matches, West Brom beat them at Old Trafford. This time though, the tables have turned with Jones, Rooney and Welbeck on the score sheet. This win puts them back in the top 6 with Everton level on pints and a game in hand, they will need to keep up the good work if they have any chance of a Champions League spot. FA Cup (England) – The oldest and most magical local Cup competition in the world soccer never fails to disappoint, with Manchester City losing against a Wigan team two years in a row. Manchester City 2-1 Wigan Athletic There was no doubt in the Minds of City fans that they would win the game. 90 minutes later however, they would be pinching themselves to come right. You cannot compare Wigan with City in terms of their playing staff, finances or infrastructure. Arsenal 1-0 Everton The Gunners are through to the Semis after they Walloped Everton at the Emirates Stadium, in a game of two halves. Everton looked to attack on the counter in the 1st half too good effect, when they equalised with a Lukaku tap in after Ozil scored in the 7th minute of the game. In the second half Arsenal’s top goal scorer (18) Olivier Giroud, was introduced into the line-up replacing Sanogo. This sub changed the game as Girou’sds hold up lay and positioning came to the fore, as he scored twice and Arteta scoring on the 68th minute. La Liga (Spain) – Valladolid 1-0 Barcelona Jamie Carragher interviewed Xavi Hernadez this week when he was on International duty for Spain vs. Italy. One question Xavi was asked comes to mind, “Is this the end of the era of Barcelona’s dominance in European football”? Of course Xavi responded with a stern answer of NO. Barcelona had the Lion’s share of possession and created most of the chances in this game and like in 90% of other games. Barcelona play a style of football that is dubbed Playstation football or ticki-tacka football, which is proving to be redundant. Valladolid just had to do with thing and one thing; defend, defend and defend. Once the opportunity arises to attack Barca, it is imperative you do it with pace and once you’re in the final 3rd you need to score and hat what Fausto Rossi did. Celta de Vigo 2-0 Atletico Madrid Former Barcelona striker David Villa scored both goals for Atletico Madrid. Atletico did not play particularly well but showed their professionalism and taking the chances they get with 2 goals in 2 minutes. Real Madrid 3-0 Levante This game can be compared to a drag race with a Gusheshe (BMW 335i) vs. Tata indica. There is no question of who the winner is there and here Madrid were in cruise control for 90 minutes and didn’t let up for one minute. Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo scoring both goals, one in the 1st half and the other in the 2nd half. Levante’s performance was capped off by a David Navarro sending off and a own goal by Karampelas in the 64th minuted. Bundesliga (Germany) - FC Schalke04 4-0 1899 Hoffenheim Dutch striker Huntelaar scored a hat-trick in a game that was more like a firing squad than a football match. The Hoffenheim defence looked like a war zone with Huntelaar the lone assassin on the prowl. Obasi contributed to the score line as well, scoring a 55 minute goal. VfL Wofsburg 1-5 Bayern Munich The opening 45 minutes of this game was the best I’ve seen Wolfsburg play against Bayern for a long time. In the half of the game it seemed as if the work rate from the 1st half diminished extravagantly as 4 goals went into the back of the net from all corners of the field. SC Freiburg 1-0 Borussia Dortmund Dortmund played a rather underwhelming performance vs. Freiburg as they only managed 5 shots on target the entire match. Defensive midfielder Sebastian Kehl scored the only goal of the game, which would puts Dortmund’s attack under a bit of scrutiny. Serie A (Italy) – Udinese 1-0 AC Mila, All time leading goal scorer for Udinese Alessandro Di Natale scored the only goal of a entertaining game which Udinese edge out the game. AC Milan’s woes continue to deepen and new manager Clarence Seedorf needs to be given time to implement his own ideals, time though is one thing he does not have. Juventus 1-0 Fiorentina In a match-up between two title contenders saw Juventus pip Fiorentina in a even match at Juventus Stadium. Asamoah scored the deciding goal in a math that either side could have won, the 1-0 result was a bit harsh as Fiorentina held their own throughout the game. Inter Milan 1-0 Torino Inter Milan dominated Torino at the San Siro but will be disappointed by the 1-0 score line. Rodrido Palacio scored the only goal on the 30 minute mark to seal victory and keep Inter in the hunt for a Top four spot. Ligue 1 (France) – Definition of French Football: New Money & Old pedigree vs. No money & relative pedigree. The scales of competition that PSG and Monaco are unbalanced to say the least but if no FFP (Financial Fair Play) rules are broken, there is nothing much one can say. SC bastia 0-3 Paris SG Zlantan scored a early goal in the 1st half and was joined by his Argentine compatriot Eziquel Lavezzi with 2 goals in the 2nd half to nail themselves to the top of the French league. AS Monaco 2-1 Sochaux A disappointing Monaco were surprised by how Sochaux took the game to them after former Tottenham striker Berbatov caught them on their heals early in the game. Sochaux were resurgent after that early goal but their efforts proved fruitless with as they lost by one goal. Other Sports: Rugby Super Rugby: Sharks 37-23 Lions Blue Bulls38-22 Blues Crusaders 14-13 Stormers Reds 43-33 Cheetas Cricket 1st T20 game South Africa vs. Australia was abandoned due to the heavy rain. West Indies vs. England in T20 International at Kengsinton oval. West Indies 170/3 & England 13/9. West Indies won by 27 runs.
