Weekly Article, “The Sheriff’s View” (#37) The delivery of 11 new desktop computers last week was a welcomed sight for your Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department. Can you imagine attempting to do your job by using a computer that might be more than ten years old? Well, some of our staff was doing just that when working in-house. Deputies would constantly vent their frustrations when having to wait for our electronic antiques to process a Word document, or possibly connect to the internet while watching the minutes tick by. Your Pulaski County deputies have been using their mobile laptops for everything possible, but with some of our systems, it requires them to be connected to an in-house network that demands a permanent computer linked to these systems. Most of the new computers are up and running, which will allow deputies and jailers to complete their necessary reporting much quicker than in the past. We were able to purchase these by using funds granted to us by the Pulaski County Law Enforcement Restitution Fund (CLERF) Board. The CLERF fund consists of monies derived from Pulaski County court cases. The trend of bizarre events continued this week with the tragic hunting accident that took the life a young Marine when he fell into a deep sink-hole in the Buckhorn area. As law enforcement officers, we see and experience things that many don’t, but just like you, we try to makes sense out of unordinary tragedies like this. The FBI is tasked with collecting data about crimes, deaths and accidents, and estimates that in approximately two out of three death cases, the victim contributed in some way to their demise. In the death of our local Marine this week, it appears that he followed all the rules and did everything correctly; unfortunately, Mother Nature had changed the terrain, causing an unusual abnormality near the victim’s back yard that claimed his life. Since this accident, I have spoken with several of our Pulaski County landowners who have recently noticed sinkholes such as this on their property, but in a much smaller scale. It is assumed that the rains in August possibly caused the large sinkhole found last week, so my caution to you is to be aware that more of these could exist. So, be careful when trekking through the woods this fall, especially in areas close to rivers and where known caves exist. The joint-agency assault on the illegal drug market continued this week in Pulaski County, with several search warrants being executed in St. Robert and Waynesville; this comes along with multiple arrests being made for Delivery, Possession or Manufacturing Controlled Substances. Also, in the Buckhorn area several mobile methamphetamine labs were seized by one of our patrol sergeants law week. These joint drug enforcement endeavors were conducted by local, State and Federal law enforcement agencies and resulted in approximately twenty suspects being arrested for drug offenses. I want to thank each of you who stopped by to visit the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department booth/tent at Cow Days in Dixon last Saturday. The weather was perfect for the estimated several thousand that made their way to downtown Dixon for entertainment, great food and a chance to interact with their community. I think the hit at our tent was the introduction of our newest member of the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department, an eight week old K-9 cop in training.
