Weekly Maine lobster forecast coming soon PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Lobster fishermen can look forward to weekly lobster migration reports this spring. Our media partners at the Portland Press Herald report the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in Portland will issue a weekly forecast to predict the migration as lobsters move from the cold, deep water off the coast to the warm, shallow water near the shore. The Institute will be assisted by Bigelow Laboratory in East Boothbay and $100,000 in funding from NASA. Temperatures in the Gulf of Maine are predicted to be as warm as they were in 2012 when an early migration flooded the market with too much lobster. Fishermen were forced to sell off their catches below market value that year and again in 2013. Scientists say fishermen, processors and dealers can be alerted to an early fishing season with a migration forecast and avoid an oversaturated lobster market. Fishermen will be able to find the latest lobster forecast through the Institutes website at gmri. The weekly forecasts will begin in the spring of 2015.
