Welcome to the fossil free campaign at Leiden University. The fossil fuel campaign has made it across the Atlantic and arrived at the University of Leiden! What is the Fossil Free Campaign? The fossil free campaign is essentially a way to fight back against the fossil fuel industry by demanding that institutions divest from companies that continue to pollute the atmosphere and contribute to the global greenhouse effect. The fossil free campaign is not an attack on individual lifestyle choices or consumption patterns; it is much bigger and far more important. The campaign takes the fight to the fossil fuel industry; the industry that has hindered any attempts to meaningfully tackle the climate change problem, through their well financed lobbying and cynical denial they been able to influence government policy for far too long. With it the campaign holds the potential to inspire countless more young people to take up action and campaign for a better future, filling them with a sense of hope and purpose. Why participate in the campaign at the University of Leiden? The climate crisis may seem at first completely overwhelming for an individual to act against, but it is vital that we remember – we are not alone in this fight. More and more ‘fossil free ‘ chapters and groups are springing up all over the world in cities, schools, universities and public institutions, from Bangladesh to the Netherlands , and totaling over 500 groups. The unprecedented growth of this international movement demonstrates the enthusiasm and desire for change that is within all of us, and by working together as a collective movement we can bring about a real force for change. So, as students of Leiden University we should take it upon ourselves to focus our campaign on the institution we are all affiliated with, and demand that Leiden University act in responsible way and directly or indirectly divest from the fossil free industry. If it is wrong to wreck the planet, then it is wrong to profit from that wreckage. How to get involved: There is so much you can do to help whether it’s a small gesture like signing our upcoming petition and liking the Facebook page or volunteering your time to help out with the campaign. We are still looking for motivated students to help us out!
