Well, Another local studio bites the dust in California in order to save money. Sony visual FX team is closing here and going to Canada. For those of you who say, doesnt matter, it doesnt effect me, well it will, as more and more work is being outsourced in order to cut costs. The real people losing out are the artists. I have heard many horror stories of production studios in Canada over working and underpaying the artists, and if you arent from Canada, you cant just fly over there and get a job, there are lots of rules and regulations. I am afraid to say if you are just studying 3D animation in school you are in big trouble. The next 5 years will prove this. I am a huge advocate of art entrepreneurship. As times are changing, it is your responsibly to change with the times. It means not giving 100% of your time to the studios you are currently in, but 70%. Why, because the minute you have provided them with what they need in order to create their franchise, they will be done with you. Developing your own content that people will want is the future. What this means is creating your own stories, developing them through channels where you own the rights. Youtube, trade shows, conventions, selling directly to the public, finding your voice, your buyers. They are out there. It is happening all the time for the people that are passionate and persistent. Many artists have found success through these means, why cant it be you, are you telling yourself you cant? I have been working professionally from the age of 18 and am now 41. I experienced many layoffs but it never affected me because I developed my own content throughout the years. I receive many e-mails from artists asking what should i do, how should I do it. Here is just one way - Self Publish. It is the beginning step of taking control of your future. Get out there, show up. You cant sit around and wait for it to come to you. You are in full control of how far you wish to take it. Learn how to draw, design, this takes time, Software is ever-changing and is merely a tool that anyone can learn, Seeing, observing, creating being distinctive takes time and real commitment.
