Well, I couldn’t sleep tonight so I thought I would put some - TopicsExpress

Well, I couldn’t sleep tonight so I thought I would put some things down on paper that some of you may think a bit weird. I laid there in bed waiting for deep slumber but kept going back to my childhood days on Roby Street in Porterville, California. I began to recall all my old neighborhood friends and acquaintances that lived within a fifteen minute walk from my house. Some of you may remember some of the names. I will begin on Cobb Street and work my way around to Roby, Cline, up to Olive and over to Hapgood Road and back to Roby. Let see if anyone can recall these folks: DeLynn Bailey, Leland Ware, Richard Overman, Shirley Curtis, Deke and Doug Wells, Michael and Bill Boudreaux, Darryl Reeves, Alfred, Gary and Larry Goss, Bobby Lykins, Floyd, Jimmy and Danny Davison, Carmen, Darlene, Dyan and Armand Zeddies, Kathy Landgraff, Dennis, Gaylon and Allison Norman, Susan Darnell, Susan Corey, Tommy Webb, Chuck and Doug VanHorn, Kathy and Patty (Oh no, I forgot their last name) Jimmy Brown, Sheila Reeves and Darryl Ensign (Nix). What a time it was growing up among these folks. My memory lets be there in that time and place. Around the ages of 8, 9, 10 we would play and sneak around the old Cottonwood tree that was next to the Big Ditch at the end of Happgood Road just before you took the turn to the dirt road that went to the Hapgood House. It was there that I took my first puff on a cigar that Chuck and Doug hid out in the dry cement channel cut. At Jimmy Browns back yard I was almost buried alive in a tunnel and fort we dug in the dirt and sandy loam. Thanks to Jimmy and Doug I was rescued. Allison and I played football and catch in my front yard often. Most of us went to West Putnam but others went to Olive. Back in the fifties it was a great time to live and grow in my neighborhood. Sneaking off to the river while they built the Hiway 65 bypass and playing in the construction site got me plenty of spankings. A great life and adventure that many kids these days will never experience. Ok, I think the Ambien is beginning to kick in. So good night one and all.
