Well, Id hoped that watching Peter Pan would ease my anger and bitterness over the Shaefer trial and the UMCs betrayal of its own best principles. It did while watching ... but you cant stay in Neverland forever. The fact remains that Im still a Methodist minister (retired) and deeply ashamed of my church, even though Im also a proudly out gay man in a relationship, which of course means Im breaking church law and incompatible with Christian teaching. I still have my ordination, I assume, because the church could care less about me, since Im no longer serving a church. But then I havent felt truly cared for by the church in a long time. Clergy covenant? Whats that? Empty words. I know what covenant means with me and Cody ... love, loyalty, and mutual support. With the UMC, covenant means walk in lockstep or we will punish you ... or at best well use you and discard you when were done with you. And the Shaefer trial, punishing a man for ministry to his gay son and allowing a prosecuter to use blatant anti-gay hate speech without rebuke, demonstrated that for all the world to see. Oh, well ... enough bitterness for tonight. Im sure there will be plenty left in the morning.
