Well done everyone who guessed this weeks idiom! Saved by the Bell - Saved by the timely intervention of something or someone. This expression comes from the boxing slang referring to a boxer being saved from defeat by the round ending, upon which a bell is sounded. It first appeared written in the Fitchburg Daily Sentinel in February 1893:...Half a dozen times Flaherty was saved by the bell in the earlier rounds.
