Well folks, Seek Books is Going Out Of Business. (This is a trifle long but please read it). I’m not going to do any of those indiegogo or other “please bail me out” things. I need 3 times the business that I’m currently getting in order to keep the place afloat and if that has not happened in almost 5 years, it’s not going to now. So I don’t need a “tide me over.” (people who have done this please don’t view this as bashing, I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with it, I’m just not going to do it) Opening a Used Book Store was a life-long dream of mine, however I knew going into this endeavor, that I was opening during a recession and when book stores were going the way of the Dodo, so this is not totally unexpected. I had the funds to operate for the time I’ve been open but that income ended in December. I’m not complaining, as not everyone gets the chance to live their dream, and I actually get to live another one as I’ll be moving to New Mexico to “retire.” So again I’m not writing this looking for sympathy or for people to give me money thinking they’ll be saving an Indie Bookstore or an American Institution. However, if you’ve been happy with Seek Books and you’d like to help me to lighten my load and partially fund the next step of my life, please buy some of my stuff. I don’t expect something for nothing and am not going to ask you for $10 for a book you could buy for a dollar any other day. I would appreciate if you could really spread the word and encourage any of your friends who may like my stuff to come over here and take advantage of the sale. The Business itself is for sale, that would include the name, all book inventory, the web site and various and sundry other things, but NOT the location. This location is probably one of the key reasons that I have to close. Any or all of the above can be purchased but please, don’t ask for prices here, either come to the store or call 617-327-7335. (Comics/Collectibles/Sports/Coins not included) I’ll be having the traditional “Going Out Of Business” sale (if someone does not buy the whole shebang) starting with a 25% discount and going up from there. I don’t suggest that anyone waits if they want something, as the good stuff will not last, and what does not sell, I’m not going to give away, I’ll cart it with me if I have to. If you’re not local and you want to be part of acknowledging the fact that I tried to keep an old way of life extant, by having a BookStore/Museum/Petting Zoo/, you can use the “buy 3 books of Seek Books choice for $9.99” option in the catalog. (click browse catalog and it will be right there) S&H will be free, except International, I just can’t do that. It’s been great to have had a chance to meet many people and part of the joy has been to see people walk out of here with items they’ve been looking for and scratching another book off their list. Exchanging information has taught me a lot. Meeting and working with Authors for signings and getting a new generation turned onto the Genres of science fiction, fantasy and horror, is priceless. Providing Gift Certificates for various charities, supporting other local businesses, and trying to enrich the Community has been rewarding as well. Asimov has loved the people coming to pet him, babysitting people’s kids, and being a source of comfort for people who were traveling and missed their cat at home. He was always up for attention. He never did understand why people were not coming in when the store was closed, as he could see them through the door and vice versa. The other Brad totally enjoyed the opportunity to get out of his house and be part of getting comics, cards and coins into the hands of collectors and encouraging kids in their pursuit of new hobbies. Talking with people about his own experiences really made his day. So with this we say “thank you” to our customers and fans. Keep reading, keep learning, keep growing. P.S.
