Well, its years end and time for me to list the films I enjoyed most this year. Notice I said enjoyed most. Im not a fan of the term best when describing any creative endeavor. There is no universally accepted metric to determine that. 10) The Grand Budapest Hotel Saw this in Seattle during ECCC and enjoyed the hell out of it. Im overdue to watch it again. 9) Gone Girl Didnt read the book so I didnt know where the hell the story was going to go but I liked the ride. A dark, nasty bit o fun. 8) Locke Tom Hardy is a chameleon of an actor. I never saw Bane. I never saw Eames. I saw Ivan Locke and, more importantly, I never saw Tom Hardy acting. This actor commits and delivers. He deserves an Oscar nod for this performance. 7) Interstellar Saw this in Imax and was transposed. Im generally not a huge fan of Nolans stuff but Matthew McConaughey brought real heart to the film. Again, it must be seen in Imax. 6) Snowpiercer A unique and compelling sci-fi action film. I need to watch it again. 5) The Babadook A low budget psychological horror film that sent chills up my spine. They never dumbed it down or went for cheap thrills. Essie Davis performance is nothing short of incredible. 4) Guardians Of The Galaxy Do I need to explain this one? 3) Jodorowskis Dune Anyone with any creative spirit NEEDS to watch this film, then face the crushing realization that you simply arent dreaming big enough. 2) Captain America-The Winter Soldier One of the greatest superhero films ever made. About as good as it gets. Plot, characterization, spectacle, excitement and plenty of humor. I can watch this one over and over. Bring on the Civil War! Would have been my number one were it not for... 1) Edge Of Tomorrow The most woefully under-viewed summer blockbuster in a long time. Where are the original Hollywood blockbusters? Why is it always sequels and remakes? Well, here it was. Everything people were looking for in their summer films but they opted for Transformers 4 instead. Super smart and very, very funny. The most fun I had at the movies this year.
