Went to see Wild today. First, let me say that any hiking movie that dares open with the heroine pitching a hissy fit mountaintop, screaming F#$% you!!! into the ethers (the very first words, I kid you not) automatically gets bonus points from me for emotional authenticity. But this movie is more than a hiking movie. This movie dares to explore the reasons why we commit ourselves to challenges we know can emotionally, physically, spiritually cripple us. There are many ways to take your demons out to tea. Taking on a long-distance hike is more like inviting your demons out for shots. At 2am, at a seedy bar, in the wrong side of town. The fact that Cheryl Strayed lost her mother at age 22, the same age I lost mine (30 years ago this week) makes me ponder my own reasons for some of the pilgrimages Ive embarked on. As well as left me snuffling through a large part of the film. This movie is brilliant, brave, honest and heartwarming. While it might not have you yearning to take up a pack and brave the elements, it certainly will have you pondering the elements you have braved, or are currently braving, in your own life.
