Wetland Conservation: What Do We Have to Lose? Lecture & Film - TopicsExpress

Wetland Conservation: What Do We Have to Lose? Lecture & Film Desmond Campus at Mount Saint Mary College 6 Albany Post Road, Newburgh Monday, July 29, 6-7:30pm Free Wetlands are of vital importance to communities because they are part of a natural system that maintains clean water, controls floodwaters, and protects shorelines and stream banks from erosion and property damage. They also provide critical habitats to many species of plants and animals, and in turn offer recreational opportunities, such as fishing, hunting, and bird watching. In the Hudson Valley region, we have a rich diversity of wetlands - including about half of the 57 different wetland community types occurring across New York. Learn about wetland diversity, the environmental and economic benefits of wetlands, and strategies for their conservation. Following a lecture with Laura Heady of the Hudson River Estuary Program, enjoy "Liquidity: The Value of Wetlands," a 25-minute documentary created locally by Hudson Valley resident Jeanne Vitale. Register for this free program here (see "Speaker Series" section) or call 565-2076.
