We’re right to target dementia, but a cure will be elusive. The Telegraph reports that even with relaxed regulations, finding an effective treatment wouldnt be easy. The Food Doctor says, so obviously more than ever, prevention is the word here... To reduce your risk of developing dementia incorporate these tips as early in life as possible - don’t wait until it’s too late. • Ensure good levels of essential fatty acids in the diet. Essential fats are vital for optimum brain function and reducing inflammation. • Include wild organic salmon, herrings, mackerel and fresh tuna at least twice a week. Other good sources are nuts, seeds, green leafy vegetables and eggs. •Reduce the amount of sugar in your daily diet. Poor blood sugar balance has been linked to poor memory and increased chance of degenerative diseases. • Reduce intake of refined, processed foods. These are not only low in antioxidant vitamins but they also burden the liver which prevents it from effectively removing toxins from the body. • Increase levels of antioxidant-rich foods. Berries, dark green leafy vegetables and highly coloured vegetables which are rich in carotenes (carrots, tomatoes and squash). • Maintain good levels of both physical and mental exercises. • Keeping your brain active with new challenges such as learning a new language or completing regular crosswords has been shown to reduce the likelihood for developing dementia later life.
