What New Year means to me Have you guys ever thought why we celebrate New Year? Why don’t we celebrate a new month, a new week, a new day, or a new moment? Is it only a matter of celebration? If this is merely about celebration, I would rather ask why not we celebrate every new moment and the every fraction of second that comes ahead. For me, New Year is a reminder which knocks the door of one’s heart, an opportunity to reflect on oneself that who we were, what we are and what we will be? So, these three question echo in our mind and most importantly what our answers would be or rather should be like? There is an old and very common proverb, yet so sound and very significant which says “people change according to the time and experiences.” I am sure that you guys must have changed a lot. No, I am not talking about our outer appearance, although it’s pretty good if you have become more handsome and good looking, here I am emphasizing on our inner smartness and inner beauty. It’s sheer waste of our good looking personality if it is only filled with negative thoughts and destructive emotions. An analogy for it would be like a shiny and golden vase which is filled with shits and disgusting dirts. Do we feel we have improved at any rate? Is there any hint of your intellectual and spiritual enhancement? Is there any indication of slight growth in generosity towards needy people, compassion to the suffering beings and tolerance? If these qualities are flooding in your every veins and nerves in your body, I would say we haven’t surely wasted our past years. It doesn’t matter whether we couldn’t earn a lot of bucks in business, it doesn’t matter whether we couldn’t score 100 out of 100 in exams, it doesn’t matter whether we couldn’t earn great reputation or fame in society or country at large. All these facts are far meagre than the above mentioned qualities. I personally believe that every new moment is a time for celebration, celebration for what you were and what you have became. Every new moment, we are learning something, either directly or indirectly, we are experiencing something new and enriching our knowledge, no matter how trivial the issue or thing may be. We are chasing towards the goal of perfection, the perfection of pure and unstained one. Of course, no one is perfect in this entire world and perfection cannot be achieved in overnight. We have to struggle for it and tackle the obstacles that come in our path. I celebrate every day and every moment because I am happy with who am I. I am happy because I have limited desires and I live with satisfaction. Today I could see another sunrise and sunset, and I am grateful for myself that I am still breathing. Tomorrow I may not be able to breathe or I may be plagued with any other circumstances but I will not let my tears trickle down my cheek while I am dying because I have no regrets at all. Therefore, every new moment means a new celebration for me. Does only the beginning of 1st January meant to be celebrated? If yes, why? Why not celebrate every moment? For many people, New Year means new clothes in wardrobe, another gifts and presents, new friendship, new girlfriend and the list never ends, but you remained the same old person who invariable goes through same and monotonous routine. Some people may make a new resolution which is of course unstable most of the time, new promise that is so fragile and new determination that never applies. To sum up, New year drags me to the subtlest and deepest of the moments that can be still fragmented into fraction of second, which reminds me that every second is precious and it should not be wasted, because that very second may change your life forever or it may never come again. So, in order not to regret in future, the present moment should be always wisely and meaningfully used. Therefore, for me, New Year means a new moment, a new moment to cultivate and enrich my knowledge and most importantly a new dawn to introspect constantly and meticulously. I pray this New Year may bring us a lot of happiness and prosperity in our life and for our family member as well. Once again, a warm and very happy New Year! Karma Yungdrung
