What a splendid review from Steven A. McKay for A Day of Fire: - TopicsExpress

What a splendid review from Steven A. McKay for A Day of Fire: stories of Pompeii. Not only does he have some very lovely and profound things to say about the book as a whole, he took the time to address a few individual words for each story individually: The Senator”, by Kate Quinn centres around someone ‘important’ for a change, and for all his wealth, power and influence he’s shown here to be just as inconsequential as everyone else in the face of the falling rocks and showering ash that’s drowning Pompeii. There is much horror, sadness and savagery in this piece but I still found it a strangely uplifting and hopeful chapter. I confess, savagery has me particularly chuffed. I get the usual cover-packaging the US gives historical fiction, which you might think of as chick in a dress HF (or as the Dowager Librarian calls them, the GGG covers for Gowned Girl, Gazing.) Theyre lovely covers, but they dont really indicate that you will find a lot of gladiator sparring, clashes of legions, assassinations, knife fights, and bloody coups in the pages behind those gorgeous gowns. So when I get a lauding review that notes savagery, well, color me pleased! stevenamckay.wordpress/2014/11/01/a-day-of-fire-a-novel-of-pompeii-review/
