What a theatre director can learn from a photographer: As I - TopicsExpress

What a theatre director can learn from a photographer: As I was selecting photos for the 2015 Gauteng Ishashalazi Booklet I realised that some shows have more than 100 beautiful dramatic images to choose from while in some shows I struggled even to get 5. Why? The CREATIVE MOULDS series I presented at the Basetsana Scriptwriting and Directing Workshop 2014 also touched base on the S, Spectacle. This element focuses on what the director decides in terms of costume, set, stage design, blocking and everything that the audience will see with their eyes. We go to the theatre to WATCH a play not to LISTEN to a play. The word theatre comes from a Greek word that means a place of seeing. Our audience are used to watching TV. Television changes images every second. A theatre director has to think about designing a series of meaningful images that tell the story or that enhance the emotion of the scene for the audience. Although the set and costume contribute to the visual effect of the play you can use the bodies of the actors on stage to visually enhance your story. Woza Albert doesnt use elaborate costume and set but it is a photographers delight as the actors create thousand of different images through the use of space and their bodies. As you design your play ask yourself. What must my audience SEE in each moment? How does each image connect with the story I am telling? When the image doesnt change the audience can lose focus and start chatting on their phones. Keep their eyes engaged. All the best for 2015 COM-TSOTSI
