What a tremendous day. Began the morning by celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.s birthday with the dedication of a 115-block stretch of Broadway running through Phoenix as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. It was inspiring to see a broad range of City and community leaders, including Mayor Greg Stanton, Councilwoman Kate Gallego, Councilman Michael Nowakowski, Congressman Ruben Gallego and Phoenix legend Calvin Goode, and to hear from several of them about the importance of preserving Dr. Kings legacy in our City. Then, it was on to a stimulating meeting with ASU Police Chief Michael Thompson and Assistant Chief Luigi Digirolamo, hosted by Dr. Matthew C. Whitaker at ASUs Center for the Study of Race and Democracy. It was a pleasure to hear from the Chief and Assistant Chief regarding their commitment to keeping ASU PDs officers focused on community engagement and enhancement, with an emphasis on putting personal relationships at the heart of their efforts. The early afternoon wrapped up on another high note, with the community swearing-in ceremony for Rep. Ruben Gallego at American Legion Post 41, with a packed house full of Rep. Gallegos family, friends and supporters from throughout the community. It has truly been a day of inspiration, and one that has only served to increase my pride in the City of Phoenix and my humility in being able to serve our great city in the presence of bold, dedicated and unparalleled leaders. #PhoenixRising
