What an awesome shelter! They can be made with 2 doors also, so cats can escape from predators. Wonder abt keeping raccoons out after a recent experience w/ urban wildlife: Eric and I found a raccoon whos back legs were paralyzed in the feral/abandoned cat area a few weeks ago. It was so sad, a juvenile raccoon dragging itself around by its front legs. Called a wildlife rehab person who recommended we trap it and take to Dr. Baines, the only DVM wholl deal with injured wildlife in central AR, at North Hills Clinic (shes allso affiliated in some way with the LR Zoo). We were worried the poor raccoon had distemper, but turned out it had a broken back prob hit by a car, or fell out of a tree). So the vet sent the raccoon to Jesus. It was SO SAD, but think we gave some comfort to the injured coon, let it know we were trying to help (it had gotten into Burts bed a few wks ago, a neighbor told me, so in retrospect I think itd had been dragging itself around radically injured for a few weeks)--and ultimately ended its suffering. & we learned about the extreme rehab people who help raccoons, squirrels, skunks, possums etc. The wildlife rehab guy was out in Carlisle picking up an injured vulture &taking it to a raptor rehab specialist. Amazing folks--they really appreciated what we do with the cats via the help/support of Feline Rescue and Rehome. & understood why we didnt wanna call Animal Control. If the coon had been able to be treated at all with a shot at being healed, they wouldve found a place for it to rehab. Had an interesting discussion with wildlife rehab guy about quality of life and decision-making. Compassionate & hard working people in the wildlife rehab community (which I didnt even know existed til this sad sad coon crossed out path).
