What are Key Competencies? Where did they come from? Are they ethically and pedagogically sound educational aims? Mmmm - I think these question might occupy my thinking for the next little while. What I already (think) I know: 1. They were introduced into Australia first. NZ quickly followed suit. 2. They are historically associated with vocational training. & 3. Dr Cherry Collins, Murdoch University dept. of Education, Perth, once had this to say about them: Key Competencies are an example of the type of common sense hocus pocus which gets thrown at education systems and which they will be blamed for failing at even though success is literally humanly impossible. And why Collins believes Australia readily embraced Key Competencies: we are probably the OECD country with the strongest anti-intellectual tradition stay tuned for more discussion of Key Competencies in the coming weeks...
