What are we framing this week? A 1924 map of Mt. Rainier! We are having spectacular weather in Washington this fall! 72 degrees in October – WOW! And a perfect time to visit Mt. Rainier! A client brought in a 1924 US geological survey map that had been used by her parents for many years. It shows the wear and tear of being opened and closed numerous times, and the accumulation of dust and dirt on the cover when it lay around in the car. Our client was framing the map as a gift to her parents, to remind them of their memories of hiking on the mountain. She wanted a simple, dark wood frame, and to let the map honor the many years of use it had seen. We didn’t gussy it up. Perhaps those of you who are more knowledgeable about the mountain can compare the glaciers shown on this map with the extent of the glaciers today? What changes in the water flow of the rivers and streams happened between 1924 and 2014? How many more roads have been built, and what kind of roads – highways where two lane roads used to wind? What areas are fully developed now that were once woods and meadows? This is one of the neat things about being a picture framer. What we do is a bit like capturing time. A map in 1924 caught Mt. Rainier at one point in time, revealing what we have gained or lost over 90 years.
