What do you think? Check the article out if you have a chance. Its been a while since I wrote here. Thats not great blogging practice, but I tend to write only when I am inspired to. I was inspired to write today. First, let me say it is a wonderful thing that we are all talking about play. It was a long time coming. Now we have a growing community that is interested in this word. But like a great many things that get energy behind them, it is fast becoming a buzz word. Scholars and practitioners alike argue about what it means, about what it looks like, about who is playing and who isnt. I have written before about some of this conflict, and the difficulty of defining it. So I am proposing that we be just a bit more specific when we discuss what we need. Using the word play is a conversation starter, but it is not really a conversation finisher. And it is not necessarily a solution driver. Below I am going to bring you some terms I think are solution drivers. No, they wont finish the conversation. I dont think I will be able to say boom at the end of this article. But they will get us closer. Curiosity Too often, we do things because we have to, or even because we just want to, stemming from a variety of motivators. Some of these motivators are destructive, and some are productive. Some depend on the situation and the other drivers present. Curiosity is an incredibly important motivator. We need to be curious about things. We need a sense of wonderment. And this is surely one of the elements of play. When is the last time you moved because you were curious about what you could do, not because you felt obligated to do it, or needed others to say you were awesome? Exploration Exploration is the action item resulting from curiosity. When we are curious enough, we will explore. We need to explore as individuals and as groups. We need both in varying degrees depending on environment, culture, and individual traits. Remember groups of kids exploring the neighborhood, the woods, the city? When is the last time you just went for a walk not for exercise but to see what you could find along the way? Community Community is an interesting concept. By community, I dont just mean people who live around each other. I mean people that, at least in part, live for each other and in harmony with one another. This does not, in my view, denote everyone walking in lockstep like drones who all believe the same thing. This just means that we seek to help one another through collective action.
