What do you think of when you picture the colors red, white and blue? Of course it is the American Flag; land of the free, home of the brave. We The People. I LOVE America. Our colors run deep. What colors do you think of when you think of a Firefighter? Nurse? Police officer? I think of Red for a Firefighter, White for a Nurse and Blue for a police officer. The same colors I think of for our great country. First responders. The people who run toward danger; who serve and protect. We are a law enforcement family. Randy retired from the Lubbock Police Department in 2002 after 28 years of working the streets. I retired in 2003 and while I was not a sworn officer, that family of people was my family. Besides being the spouse of a police officer, I worked as one of the support personnel in the Chiefs office. Marian, my sister in law, currently serves as a Sergeant for Lubbocks finest. We have hundreds of people we are proud of and love who are currently serving and countless people we love who spent their lives serving and are enjoying a well deserved retirement. I read, with great sorrow, the news reports about the officers in New York who were ambushed. Killed. Families lost a son, brother, uncle, husband, dad, friend. We The People lost someone who willingly ran toward danger when we needed them to. We The People lost someone who serves and protects. We The People should be grateful for the men and women who make this country and our city great. Our hearts broke just a little when those officers were killed.
