What has become of us? As a child, in grade school, we learned about people coming to America for a better life. Many came through Ellis Island in New York, passing the Statue of Liberty. The sonnet inscribed on Lady Liberty reads: Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me: I lift my lamp beside the golden door. -Emma Lazarus This held such meaning, such pride in country to me growing up. Now the words seem so empty.
